Chapter Twenty-seven
Josh kept a tight grip on the rim of the hot air balloonâs basket while it descended. His attention was no longer focused on the approaching ground. His eyes had glazed over, and he sported a blank look on his face. The more heâd pondered his sisterâs request, the more torn heâd becomeâto go or not to go. If only it were that simple, he thought. The trouble was that over the years, he and his colleagues had investigated a number of purported alien sightings and remains. Each time, though, a rational explanation had been uncovered for the phenomena.
In the case of atmospheric sightings, theyâd all proven to be local disturbances, whether naturally occurring or by people misidentifying highflying aircraft and balloons for spaceships. As for claims of alien ground remains, he and his colleagues had found absolutely no evidence at all to support such assertions. Theyâd chalked up such claims to hardcore enthusiasts who desperately wanted to believe in alien visitations, which resulted in these individuals being unable to accept that the weird land formations theyâd run across were solely the product of natureânot aliens. Sadly, not everyone bought into the governmentâs rational explanations. There were always some who adhered to a government cover-up, a conspiracy. âOuch.â He grabbed his forearm while glancing down at Luisa. âWhy did you pinch me?â
âA penny for your thoughts.â
He laughed. âJust a penny? How about a dollar?â
âIf you donât want to go thatâs fine with me.â
âUnfortunately, if I donât go, Iâll have guilt feelings. I mean, she is my sister and . . . and to be truthful, sheâs come to my aid a few times through the years. My earlier years that is,â he said, grinning and punching the air with his right hand.
âSo weâre going?â
âYeah, I guess so.â
In that case, we need to make reservations immediately if weâre going to leave this afternoon. Itâs already ten fifty-eight. We can skip the show this evening.â
âHell, no,â he said, snorting. âWeâve been looking forward to this show. Tomorrowâs soon enough. If it were anyone else besides Whitney, we wouldnât be going.â
âAt least weâll get to see Montana.â
He rolled his eyes. âThe one place Iâve never had a hankering to visit. I can guarantee you this tripâs going to be a waste of time.â
âDonât be that way,â she said, shaking her head. âYour sisterâs not some fringe case. Sheâs a scientist.â
He shrugged. âI wonder if weâll be able to get reservations for tomorrow morning on such short notice. Given where we need to fly into, I imagine itâs going to be a commuter airline.â
âMaybe. Iâd better call our travel agent now.â She pulled out her cellphone.
âDonât forget weâll need a car when we get there.â
